Janette Sherman’s birthday ski out to Nordeen Shelter

A great Bend tradition is gathering up a pack of friends and heading up to one of the Sno-Parks off Cascade Lakes Highway at night, skiing out to one of the warming huts and partying it up for a few hours. It was my friend Janette Sherman’s birthday a few weeks ago and a good twenty of us made the trek. We left the Meissner parking lot and skied up to the Nordeen Shelter. The moon and stars were bright and thank god most people in Bend are athletes as it was quite a slog up through the powder on the short cut we took up to the shelter. (This section was lead by Adam Craig, so the pace may have been a little accelerated.)

Some skiers more sober than others.

After the requisite consumption of various concoctions to warm us up, drunken inspiration ensued and one faction of the party decided to head straight down through the trees back to Meissner instead of trekking around the flatter section we came up. Needless to say they beat us back to the car by fifteen minutes, and endured a number of branch collisions as a result.
